Description

The Clam Chair - A masterpiece of Danish Modern Design. First crafted in 1944 by Danish upholsterer Arnold Madsen, the Clam Chair, or "Muslingestol," is a true icon of Danish design. Inspired by its distinctive shape, the chair's name captures its organic, sculptural form—one that Madsen first visualized through a hand-formed plaster model. Without any formal design training, Madsen's approach was unique and visionary. After months of searching the workshops of Copenhagen for a cabinetmaker skilled enough to produce his design, Madsen met Henry Schubell, and in 1945, they founded Madsen & Schubell to bring this creation to life.

The Clam Chair, which originally went out of production in the mid-1960s, experienced a resurgence in the 2010s when reupholstered versions began making waves at high-end auctions. This sparked renewed interest in the chair and its mysterious origins, solidifying its place in design history.

Today, Dagmar proudly reintroduces this legendary chair, staying true to the original design. Crafted using a blend of traditional joinery techniques and contemporary craftsmanship, the new edition upholds the highest quality standards. It is a celebration of Danish Modernism and its timeless appeal. A truly unique piece, the Clam Chair is not only a beautiful and comfortable armchair but also a story—one of creativity, craftsmanship, and an enduring legacy in Danish design.
