Apparatus - Artifacts of a holistic world
Apparatus is a New York-based interdisciplinary design studio that explores the relationship of lighting, furniture, and objects in their environments. Predicated on the modernist principle of Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, fully articulated collections reveal individual pieces as artifacts of a holistic world - each referencing the historical and cultural mood summoned by a singular vision.
The Studio was co-founded in 2012 by Gabriel Hendifar and Jeremy Anderson. Today under the leadership of artistic director and CEO Gabriel Hendifar, Apparatus operates galleries in New York and Los Angeles that communicate the studios singular design ethos.
Gabriel Hendifar believes that objects are not merely functional, but they also enhance our lives. He strives to create work that has an emotional impact, using seduction and sensuality to leave a lasting impression.
At Apparatus, each piece is made with a commitment to the precision of small studio craftsmanship. The human hand plays an essential role in adding soul to every object. The studio's signature materials, including marble, suede, horsehair, lacquer, and porcelain, are combined with hand-patinated brass in their dedicated New York factory.
Whether it's a light fixture or a chair, each piece strikes a balance between mechanization and the hand-made, aiming for both the contradictions of perfection and the beautiful irregularity of humanity.
